The Templeton Institute (TI) is led by Director Andrew Burkett, Professor of English and Director of the Interdisciplinary Program in Science, Technology, and Society (STS)
Andrew Burkett
Prof. Andrew Burkett’s research and teaching interests center on the intersections among science, technology, and culture from the nineteenth century to the present. He holds a Ph.D. in English literature from Duke University, where his doctoral dissertation examined the impact of Romantic literature on Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. His more recent work examines the emergence and development of media technologies such as negative-positive photography and phonography in the nineteenth century and their ties to the literature and culture of the period. Since joining Union College in 2011, he has developed a strong interest and expertise in the Digital Humanities and holds certificates in this area from Leipzig University and the University of Oxford. As Director of the Templeton Institute, Prof. Burkett brings his passion for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary scholarship and teaching, which often brings together collaborators from diverse intellectual backgrounds and forms of expertise.
The TI Steering Committee
Working closely with the TI Director, the Templeton Institute Steering Committee (TISC) oversees the workings of the institute and its various projects. The TISC's current membership includes: Cole Belmont (Union MakerSpace), Deidre Hill Butler (Sociology), Angela Commito (Classics), Mark Dallas (Political Science), Luke Dosiek (ECBE), Cherrice Traver (ECBE), and Jenelle Troxell (English).
