American Bacon Author Talk with Mark Johnson,
Tuesday, October 6th, 4pm-5pm
Schaffer Library and UCALL are pleased to host historian and author Dr. Mark A. Johnson for a presentation on his new book, American Bacon: The History of a Food Phenomenon (University of Georgia Press).
In this engaging cultural history, Dr. Johnson investigates how bacon overcame centuries of religious prohibition, social contempt, and shifting dietary advice to become a staple of modern American food culture. Tracing its arc from early modern Britain through the Civil War, the Progressive Era, and modern fad diets, he reveals how bacon’s story reflects larger national themes, including urbanization, reform movements, globalization, and intersections of race, class, and gender.

Journalist Steve Hartman and photographer Lou Bopp document the empty bedrooms of children killed in school shootings to explore absence, memory, and the unseen ripples of America's gun violence epidemic.
As these senseless incidents claim more young lives than any other cause in America, these quiet bedrooms reveal truths more powerful than statistics ever could.
