Members of the Department of Geology at Union College stand in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. We see racism as a real and current issue, and know that systemic biases exist throughout our nation, including in our education system. We acknowledge that the geosciences has one of the least-diverse populations among the STEM fields. We firmly believe science thrives when exposed to different perspectives, so we must actively pursue diversity as a key asset of both our educational and research missions. We are committed to providing a welcoming, supportive environment, free from discrimination, and will strive to improve departmental student and faculty diversity, while raising awareness through education.
"But all our phrasing—race relations, racial chasm, racial justice, racial profiling, white privilege, even white supremacy—serves to obscure that racism is a visceral experience, that it dislodges brains, blocks airways, rips muscle, extracts organs, cracks bones, breaks teeth. You must never look away from this. You must always remember that the sociology, the history, the economics, the graphs, the charts, the regressions all land, with great violence, upon the body."
Ta-Nehisi Coates
