Sarina Kuersteiner, assistant professor of history, was awarded a Laura Bassi Scholarship by Editing Press for her book manuscript-in-progress "The Culture of Notaries in Medieval Bologna." The Laura Bassi Scholarship provides editorial assistance to postgraduates and junior academics whose research focuses on neglected topics of study, broadly construed, within their disciplines. For Sarina whose research focuses on Bologna (Italy), the award is doubly special because Laura Bassi was the first woman to take up a professorship in Europe in the city of Bologna. Bassi's career culminated in chairing the physics department (then known as natural philosophy) in 1776 -- a role in which her husband, Giuseppe Veratti, was her assistant.
