Research interests

I am a scholar of the history of knowledge in premodern Islamic societies. I study forms of knowledge that have been rejected in the modern formations of religion and science, including magic, astrology, physiognomy, and alchemy. My research focuses on the occult sciences, particularly magic, as they were theorized and practiced in Islamic history. I am also interested in Islamic philosophy and the history of gender and sexuality.
