Unauthorized employment includes working without the required authorization or violating the terms of your employment authorization.
Examples may include:
- Working off campus without authorization;
- Working more hours than permitted;
- Volunteering or participating in a fellowship;
- Working outside the dates authorized for your employment; or
- Working in a position or for an employer not covered by your authorization.
This list is not comprehensive. Unauthorized employment can have serious consequences for your immigration status and future immigration benefits. Working without authorization may result in the loss of your F-1 or J-1 status, complications with future visa applications or immigration benefits, and, in some circumstances, removal from the United States.
If you believe you may have worked without authorization, or if you have any doubts or concerns about whether your employment is permitted, contact International Advising immediately. Do not begin or continue employment if you are unsure whether you are authorized to work. If you have already completed employment and are unsure whether it was authorized, please contact International Advising so we can review the circumstances with you.
