Off-Campus Employment

F-1 and J-1 students may not work off campus without the appropriate employment authorization. The type of authorization depends on your immigration status and the type of employment.

Common off-campus employment options include:

  • Curricular Practical Training (CPT): practical training during a student’s academic program that is directly related to your major and integral to your curriculum.
  • Optional Practical Training (OPT): practical training related to your major, generally used after completion of your program.
  • STEM OPT Extension: an additional period of OPT available to eligible students who earn a qualifying STEM degree.

A Social Security number (SSN) is required for all off-campus employment. More info can be found here.
