Why did you choose Spain?

I chose Sevilla, Spain because it was the perfect opportunity to both improve my Spanish and gain insight on the traditions and lifestyles of a foreign country. In terms of Spanish-speaking countries, I’ve been to Mexico before but never Spain.

What was your favorite memory from your travel experience?

My favorite memory was making new friends, both from Union and locals from Sevilla. These lifelong connections truly made the experience memorable and unique. Having this cohort of peers made studying abroad less intimidating and more hospitable.

How did the travel experience shape your perspective (academically, professionally, culturally)?

Academically and professionally, it was enlightening to develop a perspective on Spanish immigration, customs, and gastronomy. Culturally, I’ve learned to appreciate what I take for granted and have a greater understanding of cultural differences.

What was the most challenging part of your trip?

The most challenging part was definitely the culture shock; after all, Spain is halfway across the world and few Sevillanos speak English. Fun Fact: Sevillanos have a designated time of the day for naps (siestas) where businesses are closed!

What advice do you have for a student considering this travel opportunity?

Keep an open mind! With any international experience, you realize that there are many different ways of living. What’s typical for you may be completely foreign for others. Take it slow, follow the locals, and be open to change when traveling :)
