Areas of expertise

Hi! I’m Christine. I’m actually of German origin, but I went to high school in Spain, and that’s where my love for everything Spanish started! I was born in London and lived in Brazil and the US as a child, where I learned my Portuguese (which I readily forgot) and English. And when I first got a chance to teach—as a senior undergraduate, if you can believe it!—I was so energized. What a creative and fun field. I love engaging students and building student-centered and project based courses. I also love empowering students to find their voice through writing.

Biography

I love to write and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism / Advertising, and a BA and MA in Spanish Literature and Culture from the University of Kansas. And I received my Ph.D. in Hispanic Literature from Cornell University. I’m the co-founder and co-president of the Center for Humanities Communication (CHC). I also co-lead 4Humanities with Prof. Alan Liu. I publish public opinion pieces in Inside Higher Ed, HuffPost, Medium, and other outlets. My most recent book publications include The Entrepreneurial Humanities: The Crucial Role of the Humanities in Enterprise and the Economy (co-edited with Alain-Philippe Durand, 2023) and Extraordinary Partnerships: How the Arts and Humanities are Transforming America. I have also designed a student oriented career guidebook called Arts and Humanities: Don’t Leave College Without Them.

Research interests

My research interests include the advocacy and communication of the arts and humanities, education innovation, sustainability, social innovation and social change, storytelling, creativity and play.
